Allées Paul Riquet, Pedestrian promenade in Béziers, France
Allées Paul-Riquet is a pedestrian promenade in Béziers, France. It runs between the municipal theater and the Plateau des Poètes, lined with plane trees and buildings with Haussmann-style facades.
The promenade was created in 1827 on the filled-in moats of the old ramparts. In 1838, a bronze statue of Pierre-Paul Riquet was erected, and the walkway was renamed in his honor in 1868.
On Fridays, a flower market fills the walkway with stalls selling plants and bouquets. During the August feria, the same space hosts bodegas and crowds, showing how the promenade shifts from daily strolls to celebration.
The promenade is flat and easy to walk, with benches and shade from the plane trees. It is a short walk from the train station, and you can enter from either end or from the side streets.
Under the pavement, workers found cobblestones from the old tramway that ran along the right side of the promenade between 1879 and 1948. Some of these stones were saved for future projects.
