Bâtiments du Camp Jacob

The Camp Jacob buildings sit at 545 meters elevation on Morne-Houel and now house the Institute of Technology along with academic departments in literature, languages and human sciences. The campus spreads across the plateau with student residences and various teaching facilities that shape the overall site.

The site was built around 1845 under Governor Gourbeyre as a medical facility where mainland troops could adjust to tropical conditions. It later became a military installation before eventually transforming into a university campus.

The pavilions were designed as military quarters and reflect the colonial engineering approach to building in tropical climates. Visitors can observe how the structures adapted to the geography, with careful positioning to manage heat and exposure.

Visitors should note that the high elevation of 545 meters makes the weather cooler and damper than in lower regions, especially during morning hours. Good footwear is recommended since the terrain is hilly and walkways have varying surfaces.
