Hannibal, Stone statue in Tuileries Garden, Paris, France
Hannibal is a stone statue in the Tuileries Garden depicting an ancient military leader counting rings from defeated opponents. The work shows classical sculptural techniques and stands along one of the garden's main pathways alongside other artworks from the same period.
Sculptor Sébastien Slodtz created this work between 1687 and 1704 originally for Versailles. The statue was later moved to the Tuileries Garden in Paris, where it remains on view today.
The statue represents a military hero from ancient times, celebrated in European artistic tradition. It stands as one of several stone monuments depicting classical warriors that were displayed in Versailles gardens and later relocated to Paris.
The statue is located in a central area of the garden and is easily reached from Rue de Rivoli, where several entrances to the garden are available. Visiting is possible throughout the year, and the garden offers many pathways for exploring.
The base of the statue includes an inscription with the artist's signature, creating a direct link to the sculptor. This detail allows visitors to connect the work with its maker across centuries.
