French sculptor Jules Blanchard created La Bocca della Verità in 1871, and the piece was displayed at the Paris Salon exhibition in 1872.
The sculpture draws from Roman mythology, where the mouth would close upon the hand of anyone who speaks falsehoods during the test.
Located on the eastern side of Jardin du Luxembourg near Boulevard Saint-Michel, the sculpture remains accessible throughout garden opening hours.
The plaster model of this truth-testing statue appeared at the Paris Salon in 1879, following its marble counterpart's earlier exhibition.
