Stendhal, Bronze sculpture in Jardin du Luxembourg, France
The bronze medallion statue of Stendhal, created by Auguste Rodin, stands among 106 statues within the Luxembourg Gardens in central Paris.
Inaugurated on June 28, 1920, the monument resulted from a fifteen-year effort by the Stendhal Committee, formed in Paris in 1905.
The sculpture pays tribute to Henri Beyle, known as Stendhal, who wrote influential novels including The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma.
Visitors can find the monument near the École des Mines within the Luxembourg Gardens, which opens daily from early morning until evening.
The medallion design comes from an earlier model by Pierre-Jean David d'Angers, which Rodin chose to reproduce rather than create a new bust.
