Musée Mer marine, Maritime museum in Bordeaux, France.

The Musée Mer Marine occupies a 13,000 m² building designed by Bordeaux architect Olivier Brochet, with 7,500 m² of exhibition halls set among 3,000 m² of gardens. Inside, tall black-framed glass walls and two thick white rounded columns support a grey concrete beamed ceiling above a dark polished concrete floor. A double glass door in the facade opens onto an outdoor plaza.

Norbert Fradin, a Bordeaux property developer, announced the project in 2012, and the first stone was laid on 28 April 2016. The building by architect Olivier Brochet opened in 2019. Two weeks before the opening, the Marmottan Monet museum suspended the loan of 57 works over construction dust, cancelling the inaugural Monet exhibition.

The museum explores how people have always connected with the ocean through ship models, artworks, and maritime objects that show the sea's role in human life.

The museum is located in Bordeaux' historic port district and opens Tuesday through Sunday. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the different floors and exhibitions at a comfortable pace.

The entrance hall displays a polished metal sculpture of a captured shark by Philippe Pasqua, hung upside down from a rust-coloured steel frame with its mouth open to show jagged metal teeth. A rope runs over the frame's top beam and is tied around the tail.
