The Citadelle de Laon is a fortified complex with gates, bastions, and ramparts that overlook the old town from an elevated position. The structure encloses an inner courtyard area containing various buildings and offers views across the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was built in 1594 following a three-month siege, ordered by Henri IV as a means to secure strategic control over the region. Over subsequent centuries, it was reinforced and modified to adapt to changing military technology and needs.
The citadel's underground passages reveal the engineering methods of 16th-century military architecture through guided tours called 'Secrets under the City'.
You can walk through the complex and explore the ramparts and interior areas, which offer good vantage points for viewing the surroundings. Access roads are clearly signposted, and parking facilities are located near the main access points.
In 1870, the warehouse keeper ignited the powder magazine, causing significant casualties and structural damage throughout the surrounding area.
