Manufacture des Tabacs, Former tobacco factory in Amidonniers district, Toulouse, France.
Manufacture des Tabacs is a brick building complex stretching along the Brienne canal with large windows and industrial architectural features from the late 19th century. The ensemble consists of several connected structures displaying typical factory design characteristics of that era.
The building was constructed in 1894 and became a major production center for tobacco goods over the following decades. After the decline of the tobacco industry in the 20th century, the site was converted into an educational center for Toulouse-Capitole University beginning in 1996.
The factory was a major workplace for women in Toulouse, where they produced cigars and tobacco goods as part of their daily work. This industry shaped the neighborhood's character and the city's economy for many decades.
The site is located at 21 Allées de Brienne and is easily accessible via the canal promenade, which provides a pleasant approach. Visitors should check in advance which areas are open to the public, as parts of the complex are primarily used for university functions.
The roofs and facades received heritage protection status in 1990, preserving the industrial past. This protection made it possible to maintain the old structures while using them for modern teaching and research activities.
