Le Beau Manège, Artistic carousel in Jardin Raymond VI, Toulouse, France.
Le Beau Manège is an artistic carousel in Jardin Raymond VI with mechanical figures that move through the air during rides. The structure features a steam-powered rhinoceros, a velocipede, and a giant ant among its rotating components.
The carousel was created in the 1990s under François Delarozière's direction as an artistic installation. After a full restoration, it reopened to the public in 2019.
The design takes inspiration from Jules Verne's imaginary worlds, blending literary fantasy with visible mechanical engineering throughout the structure. You can see how literature shaped the aesthetic choices in every moving part.
The carousel is located near the Saint-Cyprien République metro station, making it easy to reach by public transport. Visiting in the afternoon or on weekends gives you the best chance to see it in operation.
Each rotating mechanical figure represents different flying machines and fantastical creatures, built from industrial materials and intricate gear systems. This handcrafted approach makes the carousel a working artwork that celebrates exposed machinery.
