Roucadour, Prehistoric cave in Thémines, France

The Roucadour cave features extensive galleries containing 495 wall drawings, including 139 animal representations with 43 horses and 22 felines depicted.

First explored by Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1890, the cave gained recognition after the discovery of Paleolithic paintings and engravings in its secondary gallery in 1962.

The cave gave its name to the Roucadourien cultural period, marking the transition between Mesolithic and Neolithic eras around 4200 BCE.

The cave remains under strict protection as a classified historical monument since 1964, requiring advance arrangements for any potential visits.

Archaeological excavations in front of the cave entrance revealed a complete wooden house from 4500 BCE, the most extensive found in the region.
