Maison de George Sand, Museum and classified historical monument in Gargilesse-Dampierre, France.
The Maison de George Sand is a 19th-century dwelling in a small village south of the Loire with architecture typical to the Creuse region. The building preserves four modest rooms with exposed stone walls and slate roof that reveal the daily life of a 19th-century writer.
The writer acquired the house in 1857 after discovering it during an evening walk through the countryside. She spent much of her later life here and wrote several of her works within its walls.
The house carries the name of the celebrated writer who lived and worked in close connection with the rural Creuse region. The rooms reflect the simple, grounded way of life that inspired much of her creative output.
The building is open on most afternoons during visiting hours, but check ahead for exact opening times. The nearest train station is about 13 kilometers away and provides a good travel option for visitors without a car.
The collection of items in the rooms was gathered by Mme Smeets-Sand, a family descendant, who preserved personal belongings and everyday objects. These objects offer a window into the intimate world and ordinary moments of a celebrated writer.
