Morne Cybèle, Summit in Guadeloupe, France
Morne Cybèle is a hill in eastern Guadeloupe that rises approximately 215 meters (705 feet) above sea level. From the top, you can see across the surrounding coastal landscape and out toward the Caribbean Sea.
The hill has served as a natural landmark for ships navigating the Caribbean since French colonial times in the 17th century. Its prominent position made it valuable for sailors seeking to orient themselves on the water.
Local residents maintain traditional practices of gathering medicinal plants found on the slopes of Morne Cybèle throughout different seasons.
The hike to the summit can be done throughout the year, though January through March offer drier conditions and easier walking. Marked trails lead to the top and make the climb accessible for visitors of different fitness levels.
The location experiences extreme temperature variations, from a record high of 39°C to an unusually low 1°C recorded in December 2013.
