Established in 1802 and officially inaugurated in 1819, this cemetery replaced the former burial grounds around parish churches to meet emerging public health standards.
The cemetery contains numerous sculptural works, including the notable Moses statue and pyramid-shaped Smith tomb, representing various artistic styles from antiquity to Art Deco.
The cemetery operates daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM during October through April, and extends hours until 7:00 PM from May through September.
The iron pyramid tomb of the Smith family stands as a registered historical monument, exemplifying the industrial craftsmanship of 19th-century Saint-Étienne.
