La Louve, Cooperative supermarket in Goutte d'Or, Paris, France
La Louve is a cooperative supermarket in the Goutte d'Or neighborhood of Paris, selling organic, local, and conventional products across two floors. To shop there, customers must become members and take on regular work shifts in the store.
The store opened in 2017 after a long preparation period and drew inspiration from a cooperative that had been running in Brooklyn since 1973. Its founders wanted to bring that model, where shoppers become co-owners, to Paris for the first time.
La Louve has built a close community in Goutte d'Or where members vote on which products to carry and how the store runs. Walking through the aisles, it is easy to notice that the people working there are also the ones shopping.
Shopping here is only possible with a membership, so the store is not open to casual visitors. Anyone thinking of joining should find out in advance what work commitments are expected of members.
Because members do the work themselves, La Louve is able to keep prices noticeably lower than those in ordinary supermarkets. That price difference is one of the main reasons many Parisians choose to join.
