The mountain marks the northern boundary of the Queyras Regional Nature Park, established in 1977 to protect the natural environment of the region. This protected area was created from a desire to preserve the Alpine wilderness for future generations.
The name Pic de Rochebrune comes from the brown stone that colors the rocky faces of this summit. This distinctive hue becomes immediately apparent as you approach the mountain.
The hike to Pic de Rochebrune begins in the village of Cervières and covers roughly 10 kilometers round trip with about 1110 meters of elevation gain. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential for this challenging mountain outing.
This peak holds exceptional prominence among French summits and stands out as one of the most distinctive in its mountain region. It rises notably from the surrounding terrain, even though taller peaks exist elsewhere in France.
