Town hall of Nice, Town hall in Nice, France
The Hôtel de ville de Nice is the main town hall of Nice, located in the Vieux-Nice neighborhood. Its facade is painted in a deep Sardinian red, which sets it apart from the lighter buildings nearby.
The building was constructed between 1722 and 1750 and first served as a seminary, then as a hospital in the 19th century. The city of Nice took it over in 1866 and had it restructured, and the municipal government moved in two years later.
The town hall sits in the heart of Nice's old town, surrounded by narrow streets and small shops. Its ceremonial rooms host civil weddings and official gatherings that make it a regular part of local life.
The town hall is easy to reach on foot from the center of Nice, as it sits along a busy street in the old town. Anyone coming for an administrative matter should check in advance whether an appointment is needed, since not all services are available without one.
A giant bronze thumb stands in front of the building, a sculpture called Le Pouce by artist César. It was placed there in the 1960s during the construction of an extension and has since become a quiet landmark at the entrance.
