Pic de Barette, Mountain peak in Cévennes, France.
Pic de Barette is a mountain summit in the Cévennes rising to 1,324 meters (4,344 feet) and forming part of the western ridge of Serre de la Lusette. Its slopes combine rocky outcrops with dense forest that characterize the entire ascent.
The paths to this summit follow ancient Cévennes routes that pass through ruins of Caralouzes, showing centuries of human settlement in the region. These historical trails link the landscape today with its inhabited past.
Near the summit stands a monument to André Chamson, the French writer whose works brought the Cévennes landscapes and traditions to life. The memorial reflects how deeply this region inspired its literary interpreters.
The hike begins at Valleraugue and covers about 11 kilometers round trip through chestnut groves and cultivated fields of the Cévennes region. Proper footwear and water are essential, as sections of the trail become steep and shaded.
On clear days, the view from the peak stretches across a wide panorama from Mont Lozère to the Écrins mountains and sometimes even to the Mediterranean Sea. These distant vistas reveal the location's place between mountain ranges and the coast.
