The beach takes its name from the corsairs, privateers licensed by the French crown to raid enemy shipping. Bayonne and the Anglet coast lived from this maritime activity and from cod fishing and whaling from the 16th century onward. The beach lies in Anglet, in the Labourd province of the northern Basque Country, on the Atlantic shore 700 km southwest of Paris.

The beach's Basque name, Xibertako hondartza, is used alongside the French Plage des Corsaires, a reminder that Anglet lies in the Labourd, the northern Basque province. Corsaire refers to the privateers once licensed from this stretch of the Atlantic coast.
