Pic Occabé, Mountain summit in French Pyrenees
Pic Occabé rises to 1456 meters and features limestone rock formations with snow-covered slopes across the northern French Pyrenees. The mountain transitions between steep rocky sections and gentler hillsides, creating varied terrain for walkers.
Ancient stone circles known as cromlechs lie beneath the snow around the summit, indicating prehistoric human presence in the area. These archaeological remains show that mountain dwellers or travelers have inhabited or passed through this region since earliest times.
The summit marks a natural boundary between French and Spanish Basque territories and served as part of pastoral routes used by local herders. Visitors can still observe evidence of these traditional grazing practices in the landscape today.
Hikers can reach the summit via a trail from Mendive, with the GR10 long-distance path offering a marked route to the peak. Warm clothes and sturdy footwear are essential, as the path becomes challenging during snow or bad weather.
The summit offers direct views of Pic d'Orhy, which at 2017 meters towers significantly higher in the distance. Wild animal tracks pressed into virgin snow reveal the natural inhabitants that roam these slopes.
