Château d'Hautpoul, Medieval castle ruins in Hautpoul, France

The lower castle forms an irregular quadrilateral structure with remaining openings, while the upper castle stands as a fortified house with circular towers.

The original fortress was constructed in 413 by the Visigoths on a mountain side, controlling the strategic Arnette and Thoré valleys above present-day Mazamet.

The castle belonged to the Hautpoul family, documented since 930, with Pierre-Raymond participating in the First Crusade and later generations supporting the Cathars.

The lower castle section remains open to visitors through the Mazamet footbridge, while the upper castle maintains private ownership status.

The castle walls exhibit Visigothic construction techniques, particularly visible in the surviving lower section with its distinct herringbone stone pattern.
