Footbridge of Mazamet, Simple suspension bridge in Hautpoul, France.
The footbridge of Mazamet is a steel suspension bridge that spans 140 meters across the Arnette valley. It connects the town with the village of Hautpoul while crossing roughly 70 meters above the gorge, with a width of 1.2 meters and safety railings along its length.
The bridge was inaugurated in September 2018, creating a direct connection between Mazamet and the medieval village of Hautpoul. This recent link near the ruins of Saint Saveur church provided a new way to access the area's historical sites.
The footbridge forms part of the Fil de L'eau walking trail that guides visitors past former industrial sites and historical landmarks along the Arnette River. This path shows how the region has reconnected its industrial past with the natural landscape.
The bridge is designed for pedestrians and has a narrow width, so slow walking and yielding space when meeting others is necessary. Free parking is available at the access points, and the crossing is best done during clear weather since rain can make the surface slippery.
The bridge connects two ridges of the Montagnes Noires, offering views of the valley landscape while crossing. Many visitors overlook how the structure appears light and swaying, even though it is stable enough to safely carry many people daily.
