Château du Bois-du-Loup, Heritage castle in Augan, France
Château du Bois-du-Loup is a castle in Augan that displays Renaissance features, with its southern side built from dressed stone and its northern side combining granite and purple schist materials. The building sits on the grounds of the Coëtquidan military academy and remains closed to regular visitors.
An earlier structure was built in 1686 by Jean-François Larcher, but the current building was constructed between 1871 and 1874 by Count Roland des Clos de la Fonchais as a replacement. This later version represented a complete redesign of the site under new ownership.
The estate belonged to multiple noble families through centuries, including the Larcher family who expanded the property during the 17th century.
The castle is not open to the public as it stands within a restricted military area of the academy. Visiting the site requires special permission from the appropriate authorities.
The building suffered significant damage during World War II when American troops used its southeastern tower as target practice. These marks of war remain visible on the damaged structure today.
