Butte de Tiot, Prehistoric burial mound in Campénéac, France
Butte de Tiot is a prehistoric site with two burial mounds located on a hilltop in Campénéac. One of the mounds contains a megalithic burial chamber built from schist slabs arranged in a stone structure.
The site was inhabited and used during the Bronze Age. Archaeological investigations in the 1980s uncovered evidence of this period of human activity.
The two burial mounds here show how people in ancient Armorica changed the way they honored their dead over time. You can see how individual tombs gradually replaced earlier group burial practices.
The location sits in open terrain on top of a hill, making it fairly straightforward to reach. Access is simple since the mounds are clearly visible from the surrounding landscape.
Pollen studies of soil samples reveal that the ancient landscape consisted mainly of hazel and birch trees alongside grass-covered clearings. This indicates humans actively shaped the land around the burial site.
