Le Mont de l'Herba

Le Mont de l'Herba is a mountain summit in the Jura range located near Les Hôpitaux-Vieux in the Doubs department, composed of sedimentary rock. The slopes feature open pastures dotted with grassland and gentle terrain, offering clear views across the surrounding landscape.

The summit sits in a region that long served as a natural border between France and Switzerland, shaping its historical importance. This border location influenced how settlements and pastoral lands developed across the area over many centuries.

Herders have long used the meadows around the summit for grazing livestock, shaping the open grasslands that define the landscape today. Visitors can still see evidence of this pastoral tradition in the cleared pastures and simple mountain shelters scattered across the slopes.

The climb is accessible via marked hiking trails that are well-signed with varying difficulty levels for different visitors. Wear sturdy footwear and check weather conditions before you go, as mountain weather can change rapidly.

A triangular stone sculpture crowns the summit, functioning as both a viewpoint marker and a geodetic reference for establishing geographic coordinates. This structure reveals how the peak has long been used for surveying and navigation purposes.
