Passerelle himalayenne des gorges de la Romanche, Pedestrian suspension bridge in Livet-et-Gavet, France
The passerelle himalayenne des gorges de la Romanche is a pedestrian suspension bridge over the Romanche river, located in the commune of Livet-et-Gavet in the Isère department. It spans roughly 15 meters and hangs about 10 meters above the water.
The bridge was built as part of a footpath network to connect the hamlets of Livet-et-Gavet that the river separated from each other. The Romanche has long acted as a natural dividing line in this valley, making crossings between the two banks difficult.
The footbridge links the hamlet of Ponant on the right bank to the climbing walls and the hamlet of Les Roberts on the left bank of the Romanche. It is regularly used by climbers who walk across it to reach the rock faces on the other side.
The bridge is reached on foot via a narrow path that slopes down toward the river from the Ponant hamlet side. The path is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs, and sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Despite its name suggesting something grand, this is one of the shorter Himalayan-style footbridges of its kind in France, at just 15 meters. The name refers to the construction style, with steel cables and wooden planks that recall the suspension bridges found in mountain regions.
