Sukhumi, Port city in Abkhazia, Georgia
Sukhumi is a port on the Black Sea in the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia in Georgia. The settlement stretches along the shore with stone beaches and is surrounded by mountains, while Mediterranean vegetation shapes the landscape.
Greek settlers founded the settlement in the 6th century BC as Dioscurias and it later became a Roman trading post. Over the centuries parts of the old settlement disappeared beneath sea level.
The Botanical Garden displays plants from all climate zones and serves as a place for walks among old trees. Visitors can stroll through alleys lined with tall palms and magnolias.
The central market offers fresh produce daily and the waterfront promenade runs parallel to the shore. Restaurants along the water serve regional dishes from Georgia and Abkhazia.
The Besleti Bridge from the 12th century was built without binding materials and still spans the river today. The construction holds together through the precise arrangement of stones.
