Mtatsminda Pantheon

Mtatsminda Pantheon is a memorial cemetery located on the slope of Mtatsminda mountain in Tbilisi, situated near Saint David's Church. The site features decorated graves and monuments dedicated to notable Georgian figures across different time periods.

The site became an official pantheon in 1929 when it was designated to commemorate an important Russian writer already buried there a century before. This formal recognition transformed it into a dedicated space for honoring Georgia's most important cultural figures.

This burial ground honors Georgia's most important writers, artists, and thinkers whose contributions shaped the nation's culture over generations. Walking through, you see how people mark and remember those who left a lasting impact on Georgian society.

The cemetery sits on a steep mountainside with multiple staircases and winding paths that require physical effort to navigate. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and plan extra time to reach all areas of the site.

The burial ground ran out of space in 2009 after becoming a fully occupied memorial site for Georgia's most honored citizens. This shortage led to the creation of new pantheons elsewhere in the city to continue the tradition.
