Church of St. David, Tbilisi

The Church of St. David stands on the slopes of Mtatsminda Mountain with a cross-domed design built from brick, featuring entrances on the western and southern sides. The structure serves as an active place of worship where visitors can observe Orthodox religious practices and the surrounding cemetery.

The first church was established in the sixth century by religious figures including St. David, who came from the Church of Antioch. This early foundation shaped the spiritual significance of the mountain and its continued importance in Georgian Orthodox tradition.

The name Mtatsminda means 'Mountain of Light' in Georgian, reflecting the spiritual importance this place holds for the community. The cemetery around the church serves as a gathering place where visitors learn about notable Georgian artists and writers laid to rest here.

St. David carved a cave into the mountainside, which gave the mountain its original name Mamadaviti. Later the name changed to Mtatsminda, but the saint's cave remains a compelling destination for pilgrims and history enthusiasts.
