The Gruzugol building features a 55-meter decorative tower and facades covered with tuff stone, following the architectural principles of Soviet monumentalism.
Constructed in 1953 by architects Konstantin Chkheidze and Mikhail Chkhikvadze, the building received criticism in 1955 for its excessive decorative elements.
The Georgian Academy of Sciences and the Georgian Filmmakers Union now occupy this monumental structure, which reflects Soviet architectural aesthetics.
The grand colonnade entrance stairs serve as a marketplace for souvenir vendors, making it a frequent stop for visitors exploring Tbilisi.
The building's construction costs for facade cladding reached 8.1 million rubles, representing 33 percent of the total construction budget.
