Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Russian Orthodox cathedral in Marjanishvili, Tbilisi, Georgia
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Russian-Byzantine cathedral in Tbilisi, Georgia, known for its impressive architecture. The building had a 13-meter central dome that rose approximately 40 meters high, making it the largest religious structure in the entire Caucasus region.
The cathedral was founded in 1871 under Russian imperial rule and took 26 years to complete. This construction project was a major symbol of Russian influence over Georgian territory during this period.
The interior decoration was inspired by Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral and featured icons based on works by Russian painters. Visitors could see these artistic influences in the religious images throughout the building.
This was a place that housed holy objects important to the faithful. Visitors should be aware that this was a sacred site with historical significance that required respectful approach.
The building housed relics of great religious importance, including the remains of Mary Magdalene and sacred martyrs. These precious objects made it an important pilgrimage destination for the faithful from across the region.
