Marousi, suburb of Athens, Greece
Marousi is a municipality in the northeastern part of Athens, Greece, covering residential neighborhoods, office districts, and commercial areas. It sits along the main corridor connecting central Athens with the northern suburbs of Attica.
The area corresponds to the ancient Attic deme of Amarusion, a local administrative unit in the plain north of Athens during classical times. It grew rapidly into a dense suburb during the 20th century as the city expanded outward.
The name Marousi comes from the ancient deme of Amarusion, and this origin still shows in the official municipal name Amarusio used today. Local cafes, open-air markets, and neighborhood squares give a good sense of how residents spend their everyday time.
Marousi is served by the Athens metro line 1, making it easy to reach from the city center without a car. Summer heat in the open plain can be strong, so early mornings or late afternoons work best for walking around.
Several venues for the 2004 Athens Olympics were built in or near Marousi, including the main Olympic stadium, which sits just a short walk from the local metro stop. This connection is still noticeable today in the street names and the scale of the surrounding sports complex.
