Solon Karydakis pedestrian bridge, Footbridge in Psychiko, Athens, Greece.
The Solon Karydakis pedestrian bridge spans across Kifisias Avenue, connecting two neighborhoods through a 94 meter-long walkway supported by steel cables and glass railings. Reaching about 40 meters high, the structure includes four elevators to help people cross this busy six-lane road safely.
The bridge opened in November 2011 following design work completed in 2010 by an architectural team led by Faedon Karydakis. It was created to improve the connection between the Filothei-Psychiko and Chalandri areas.
The Hellenic-American Education Foundation and Greek Ministry of Infrastructure developed this bridge to enhance urban connectivity between Filothei-Psychiko and Chalandri municipalities.
The four elevators make access easy for people with mobility challenges or heavy luggage. Crossing is best done during quieter times of day when traffic noise is less intense.
The structure features an asymmetrical design where cables alternate from side to side, with the central section deliberately left without cables. This unusual approach gives the bridge an open, airy appearance above the busy roadway.
