Myrtos Beach, Beach in Pylarei Municipal Unit, Greece
Myrtos Beach stretches for 800 meters (half a mile) between Mount Agia Dynati and Mount Kalon Oros with white marble stones that become smaller toward the water. The bay forms a curved line along the steep coastline with several natural shade spots beneath rock outcrops.
The bay became internationally known in the early 2000s through the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin and developed afterward into a frequently visited coastal stretch. Fishermen from Divarata used the shore earlier as an anchorage for small boats.
The sea displays a particular turquoise shade here that forms from the light marble pebbles and changes with different lighting conditions. Visitors can observe how waves break on the steep shore while keeping the stones in constant motion.
A narrow road with tight bends leads down from Divarata to the shore and offers several viewpoints along the way. The stones at the waterline can be slippery and water shoes help when walking.
The light marble pebbles come from the surrounding mountain slopes and are constantly sorted anew by waves and tides. Larger stones remain higher up on the shore while finer material gets washed into the water.
