Chersonissos

Chersonissos is a village in the Hersonissos Municipality on Crete that spreads across different elevations ranging from about 28 to 100 meters. From its hillside position, the settlement offers views of the surrounding Mediterranean landscape.

The settlement has been continuously inhabited since ancient times and shows archaeological links to the Roman province of Creta et Cyrenaica. This long human presence across centuries shaped how the place developed into what it is today.

The village keeps Cretan customs alive through local celebrations where people gather to cook regional food and play traditional music together.

The village is reachable through regular bus services from Heraklion, located about 25 kilometers to the west, with departures throughout the day. Its hillside position means wearing comfortable shoes helps when exploring the different elevation levels.

Below the water surface, submerged ruins of the original Roman port remain visible, telling of the ancient maritime infrastructure. These remains show how the sea once served as a vital highway for trade and connections.
