Kastos, Island in Lefkada Municipality, Greece
Kastos is a small island in the Ionian Sea, with a rocky western coast and a flatter eastern shore where both harbors are located. It lies south of Lefkada and is one of the least populated islands in the region.
Kastos belonged to the Cephalonia Prefecture until 1974, when it was transferred to the Lefkada Prefecture through an administrative reform. This shift brought it administratively closer to the neighboring island it now depends on for most services.
The church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos holds wall paintings by Spyridon Gazis, a painter from the Eptanesian school. His work gives the interior a character tied to the artistic tradition shared across the Ionian islands.
The island has very few services, so it helps to bring supplies before arriving, especially outside summer. The main port on the east coast is the natural starting point and gives easy access to the small village nearby.
In the Kalikerimi area, some olive trees have trunks so wide that several people would need to join hands to wrap around them. These trees are still tended and productive today, continuing a cycle of cultivation that goes back many generations.
