Tigva Monastery

Tigva Monastery is a monastery in Shida Kartli featuring a domed cross-in-square layout with three entrances built from reddish stone. The structure measures roughly 15 by 24 meters and displays typical medieval Georgian architectural design.

The monastery was founded in 1152 and became associated with a royal figure who later took monastic vows there. This connection shaped its religious importance until that person's death in 1161.

The northern entrance displays an inscription in asomtavruli script, acknowledging the founder's contribution to this sacred site. This ancient Georgian writing form reflects the scholarly traditions of the era.

The monastery sits at roughly 857 meters elevation in the Prone river valley and requires careful planning for access. Reaching it involves regional routes that may vary depending on the season.

The interior walls once held paintings showcasing medieval Georgian artistic techniques, though they have significantly faded. These lost decorations reveal the artistic standards that were once maintained at this location.
