Puijo, Nature observation tower in Kuopio, Finland.
Puijo is an observation tower built on top of a hill of the same name in Kuopio, Finland, rising about 75 meters tall and sitting roughly 224 meters above the city below. The tower has an open viewing platform at the top and a revolving restaurant just below it, both offering a full 360-degree view over the surrounding lakes and forests.
The first wooden lookout structures on Puijo hill were built in the late 1800s, making this one of the older observation sites in the region. The current concrete tower was completed in 1963, replacing earlier structures that had stood on the same spot.
The revolving restaurant at the top lets visitors eat Finnish food while the landscape slowly turns around them through large windows. This combination of a meal and a moving view is something locals and tourists both seek out on a clear day.
The tower is open year-round and is easy to reach from the center of Kuopio by bus or car. The outdoor platform at the top is fully exposed to the weather, so dressing in layers is a good idea, especially in winter.
A ski jumping hill sits right next to the tower and has been used for national competitions for decades, giving the site a sporting life beyond tourism. From the viewing platform, you can look directly down onto the jump ramp and get a real sense of how steep the drop actually is.
