Vartiovuorenmäki, Hill and park in II District, Turku, Finland
Vartiovuorenmäki is a wooded hill about 50 meters high with several well-maintained walking paths throughout. From the top, you get wide views across Turku and the surrounding area.
During Russian Empire times, the hill served as an artillery position because of its elevated vantage point. This military role shaped the location for many decades.
The park around the hill serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors spend time outdoors together. Regular events and activities here bring the community together throughout the seasons.
The pathways are clearly marked and easy to walk on as they lead up to the hilltop. You can reach this place on foot from central Turku or by using public transportation.
Next to the hill stands a neoclassical observatory built in 1819 and designed by Carl Ludvig Engel. This remarkable building survived the Great Fire of Turku in 1827 and remains standing today.
