Moomin Museum, Literary museum in Tampere, Finland
The Moomin Museum is a literary and art museum located inside the Tampere Hall cultural center in Tampere, Finland. It holds thousands of original drawings, watercolors, and handmade scenes created by artist Tove Jansson for her Moomin stories.
Tove Jansson began creating the Moomin characters in the 1940s, and the collection of her original work grew steadily before becoming a formal museum. The museum moved through several locations over the years and eventually settled in Tampere Hall, where it has been open to the public since 1987.
The Moomin characters were created by Finnish artist Tove Jansson, and her work has become a reference point for Finnish storytelling across generations. Visitors from many countries come to Tampere specifically to see the original drawings and handmade scenes up close.
The museum is on the lower level of Tampere Hall and is easy to reach on foot from the city center, with step-free access throughout. Allow at least an hour and a half to look through the drawings and the detailed miniature world without feeling rushed.
The centerpiece of the museum is a blue miniature Moomin house that Tove Jansson helped build herself and that toured the Nordic countries for years before finding a permanent home here. The house is lit from within and shows tiny handmade details in every room.
