Vesilahti, municipality in the region of Pirkanmaa in Finland
Vesilahti is a municipality in southwestern Finland, in the Pirkanmaa region, surrounded by forests, farmland, and a series of lakes. Lake Pyhäjärvi, with its shallow bays and fishing grounds, is one of the most visible natural features of the area.
The area has been inhabited for around 8,000 years, as shown by archaeological finds dating back to after the last Ice Age. By the 17th century, farms and estates such as Laukko Manor had grown into landmarks that shaped the character of the land.
Rya weaving, a craft of making knotted rugs for occasions such as weddings, is still part of local identity in Vesilahti. Every five years, the Narvan Market brings the community together around crafts, food, music, and traditional dances.
Vesilahti is most easily reached by car, though bus connections to nearby towns and Tampere are available. New cycling and walking paths link different parts of the municipality, making it a reasonable area to explore on foot or by bike.
Near Lake Pyhäjärvi, the Kurki Ecovillage is a community built around sustainable farming and permaculture, drawing visitors from across the Nordic countries. It hosts the Nordic Permaculture Festival, where people come to learn about low-impact ways of growing food and managing land.
