Sara Hildén Art Museum, Modern art museum in Särkänniemi, Tampere, Finland
Sara Hildén Art Museum is a modern and contemporary art museum on the shore of Lake Näsijärvi in the Särkänniemi area of Tampere. The red brick building holds several gallery rooms across different levels, with spaces suited for both large-format works and smaller pieces.
The museum was founded in 1975 after Sara Hildén donated her collection to the city of Tampere and opened its doors in 1979. Since then, the collection has grown through further gifts and acquisitions, covering a wide range of European modern art movements.
The museum is named after Sara Hildén, a collector from Tampere who spent much of her life gathering works by European modern artists. Her collection and temporary shows are displayed side by side, giving the place a personal character that goes beyond a typical public gallery.
The museum is within walking distance of central Tampere and is also easy to reach by public transport. All exhibition areas are step-free and accessible to visitors with mobility needs.
The brick facade of the building is decorated with patterns drawn from the textile work done at the nearby Finlayson factory. That factory was once one of the largest in northern Europe and shaped the daily life of generations of workers in Tampere.
