Crusell Bridge, Road bridge in Länsisatama, Finland
Crusell Bridge is a road bridge in Helsinki that connects Ruoholahti district to the residential area of Jätkäsaari, spanning approximately 174 meters across the water. It features separate lanes for pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and trams arranged alongside each other.
The bridge was completed in 2010 and opened to traffic in June 2011 as an important step in Helsinki's development. It was among the first major construction projects in Finland to use digital planning methods during its realization.
The bridge carries the name of Giovanni Battista Crusell, a Swedish composer whose work remains known in Finland. It connects two neighborhoods where daily life unfolds, with people of all ages crossing between different sides of the city.
Crossing is straightforward since pedestrians and cyclists have their own paths separated from car traffic. It works well to use the bridge on clearer days when views of the surrounding water are most rewarding.
The two pylons rise about 49 meters above the bridge and shape the skyline of western Helsinki. Their design becomes particularly striking in the evening when lighting illuminates the structure.
