Runeberg’s spring, Natural spring in Ruovesi, Finland
Runeberg's spring is a natural water source set within forested land near Ruovesi, in Finland. It lies at the end of Runebergintie road and is marked on-site with informational signs.
The spring became known through its connection to Johan Ludvig Runeberg, who worked in the region as a home teacher and knew the landscape well. In 1924 the site was placed under nature protection, making it one of the first formally protected natural locations in Finland.
The spring is named after Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, who spent time in this area as a young man. Visitors walking through the surrounding forest can feel the closeness between the landscape and the poetry it is said to have shaped.
The spring is easy to reach by following Runebergintie road to its end, where signs point the way. The path runs through forested terrain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
A walking path of about 600 meters (roughly 2,000 ft) links the spring to other points in the area associated with Runeberg. This short loop lets you trace the poet's presence across the landscape in a single visit.
