Siskotyttö, Bronze statue at Market Square, Kuopio, Finland.
Siskotyttö is a bronze statue positioned at the western edge of Kuopio Market Square, showing a female figure holding a balance scale. It faces toward city hall and serves as a natural focal point in the heart of the marketplace.
The sculpture was created in 1984 by artist Taru Mäntnen, who won a competition to design a portrait of a Savo market seller. The artwork commemorates the women whose trading activities shaped the economic history of this place.
The name means Sister Girl and honors the market vendors who shaped commerce in Kuopio. The figure remains a symbol of these women's economic importance to the city.
The statue sits in a central location and is easily accessible on foot from most parts of the marketplace. Nearby is the Market Hall where you can explore the area and see local vendors selling their goods.
During May Day celebrations, students traditionally decorate the statue with caps and ribbons. The local Martta organization participates in these festivities while carefully cleaning the bronze surface.
