Diocletian's Palace, Roman villa in Split, Croatia
The rectangular palace complex measures 215 by 180 meters, featuring four corner towers, entrance gates on each side, and defensive walls with additional towers.
Construction of the palace began around 295 AD under Emperor Diocletian, who selected this location near his birthplace to build his retirement residence.
The palace complex transformed from an imperial residence into a living city, where medieval structures emerged within Roman walls, including Saint Domnius Cathedral.
The southern section contains Emperor's quarters and ceremonial spaces, while the northern area housed military guards, servants, and storage facilities.
Three Egyptian sphinxes from 1500 BC stand within the palace walls, transported across the Mediterranean Sea for Emperor Diocletian's personal collection.
