Iron Gate, Roman entrance gate in Split, Croatia
The Iron Gate features a corridor measuring 5.2 meters in height with both outer and inner sections connected through a series of arcades.
Constructed in the 4th century during Diocletian's reign, the gate initially served as a military entrance and later transformed into a courthouse in medieval times.
The gate houses the Church of Our Lady of Zvonik, built in the 11th century above the entrance, preserving religious artifacts and medieval architectural elements.
The Iron Gate maintains its original function as an active entrance to Split's old town, connecting modern streets with the historical palace complex.
The gate displays a 24-digit clock instead of the conventional 12-hour format, marking time in a distinctive way for visitors and residents.
