Stomorska

Stomorska sits on the northern coast of Šolta island, stretching along a sheltered bay where stone houses overlook the Adriatic Sea. The settlement follows the natural curve of the shoreline, with residences and boat shelters clustered around a central harbor basin.

The settlement grew during the Austro-Hungarian period as a maritime hub, when local sailors transported goods such as wheat and lime across Adriatic waters. These trade connections shaped the economic foundation of the place for many generations.

Fishing traditions remain deeply rooted in everyday life here, with fishermen bringing their catch to the waterfront in the early morning hours. The relationship between the community and the sea is reflected in how the village is organized and used.

The place offers lodging for around 500 guests, with many apartments located near beaches on both sides of the bay. The harbor is easily reached on foot, and the shallow coastal waters provide straightforward access to the sea.

The harbor keeps a fleet of traditional wooden fishing boats called kaički alongside modern vessels, showing how maritime activities have evolved over time. This mix of old and new demonstrates how the place has preserved its seafaring identity while modernizing its methods.
