Maslinica, Coastal settlement in Šolta, Croatia
Maslinica is a coastal settlement on the island of Šolta with natural bays and several small islets off the western shore that create a sheltered harbor. The village has a working marina with space for roughly 60 boats, where water, electricity, and boat maintenance facilities are available.
The settlement was strengthened in 1708 when the Marchi family built a fortified tower to defend against pirate raids that threatened this coast. That structure marked the place as a protected harbor and remains a visible reminder of how defense shaped early settlement patterns.
The settlement grew around fishing traditions that still shape daily life, with boats heading out regularly and catches flowing to local eating places. The connection to the sea remains woven into how residents use the harbor and the rhythms of work here.
The best time to visit is during warmer months when the harbor is active and restaurants and services are regularly open. The village is small and easy to explore on foot, with plenty of time for walking along the waterfront and exploring nearby islets.
The old fortress built by the Marchi family was converted into a hotel and stands as one of the few baroque structures still visible on Croatian islands. The building even has a helipad, blending historical architecture with modern convenience in an unexpected way.
