Benkovac, town and settlement in Zadar County, Croatia

Benkovac is a small town in Zadar County, located inland but close to the coast, with narrow streets and old stone buildings that give it a quiet character. The layout reflects centuries of settlement, with a main square, two historic churches, and the remains of a fortress that once protected the area.

The area was first settled by the Liburnian people in ancient times, then became part of the Roman world before declining and being rebuilt as a medieval fortress town. The main fortress was constructed in the 15th century and expanded with additional defenses during Ottoman expansion into the region.

The name comes from a local family that held power here for centuries, and the narrow streets and stone buildings reflect the everyday rhythm of a rural Dalmatian community. Markets and local gatherings bring residents together to share agricultural goods, crafts, and traditional food that connect people to the land around them.

The town is accessible by car or train and offers simple accommodation in guesthouses and family-run farms that provide insight into local life. The best time to visit is April through October when the weather is pleasant and weekly markets operate regularly.

Near the town stands Kličevica Fortress, which contains a bronze cannon believed to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the rarest artifacts of its kind in Europe. This unexpected connection to one of history's greatest minds adds a layer of intrigue for visitors interested in Renaissance engineering and military history.
