Ostrovica Fortress, Medieval hilltop castle in Zadar County, Croatia
Ostrovica Fortress is a stone castle ruin standing at 318 meters elevation on solid rock between the regions of Bukovica and Ravni Kotari. The site preserves stone water cisterns, carved stone staircases, and pottery fragments from its original construction.
Built in the 12th century, this fortress passed between the Šubić noble family, the Republic of Venice, and Ottoman rulers as control shifted. It remained militarily important from the 12th through the 17th century until its destruction during the Ottoman-Venetian conflicts.
The fortress was called the 'Key to the City of Zadar' because it watched over medieval trade and military routes. This strategic importance shaped how people in the region saw the place.
The location at 318 meters elevation means you will face a steep climb with good views across the surrounding landscape. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time to explore the ruins and enjoy the views.
This fortress remained a center of power for over 500 years despite changing hands repeatedly among different rulers. Its long continuity makes it a rare example of sustained influence through many shifts in who controlled the region.
